Episode 134 | Go Ahead, Discuss Your Pay

Question

β€ŠHi Work Wives, this is Kate from Boston. Um, I recently started working in marketing for a company about three months ago. The negotiation process for this position was uncomfortable as they had me do this through my direct manager, not HR or recruiting, and I was met with confusion as to why I was negotiating in the first place, which is weird.

Anyways, they did end up increasing my salary by 2K. I wasn't happy with this and felt very undervalued. But I took the position, so at least I had income while I looked for something else. However, this week, come to find out that a new college grad came onto our team and will be doing a very similar position to me, except for that I have at least seven years more experience and she is being paid over 10,000 more than I am.

I was given this tea by a fellow coworker, and I'm not sure how I could bring this up to management without outing them. To make matters worse, I am being asked to do more and more within my role without any conversations about salary bumps. And I'm feeling extremely undervalued, disheartened, and extremely insulted.

Any advice on how to move forward would be greatly appreciated.
